Contributions are invited to a special issue of the
International Journal of Engineering Education (IJEE) conforming to the theme
of Mobile Technologies for Engineering Education. The advent of mobile and wireless information
technologies has a tremendous impact on different facets of our lives. In
factories, wireless sensor and control networks are now prevalent and mobiles
are emerging and doubling as wireless data logging instruments. In offices,
handheld devices allow access to schedules, emails, office documents,
facilities booking systems on an anytime and anywhere basis. Meetings can be
scheduled and held with participants at different locations and on-the-go. In
homes, mobile devices allow remote control and monitoring of security systems
and home appliances, and linking up to remote offices. The speed, clarity, timeliness, and mobility of information
retrieval and delivery, possible with the current wireless communication
framework, have tremendous potential to open up new channels of learning and
education. Coupled with the trend that mobile technology such as SMS/MMS,
WAP, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 3G are commonplace functions of mobiles, truly
mobile education is now possible. The possibilities opened up will certainly
span more widely than simply downloading web materials, uploading reports, or
even carrying out experiments on desktops away from the laboratory. This special issue is intended to collate realisable
ideas as well as prototypes and tested implementations of mobile engineering
education delivery. Examples of topics of interest include, but not limited
to: ·
Education
delivery approaches based on mobile technologies ·
Education
assessment approaches based on mobile technologies ·
Self-learning
possibilities with mobile technologies ·
Coordination of
students and facilities via mobile technologies ·
Impact of mobile
technologies on traditional distant learning ·
Time and space
relievers using mobile technologies · Difficulties with implanting mobile engineering education systems · Pedagogical, philosophical and historical reflections on these approaches and systems · Economical studies of these approaches and systems Important
